What is Active Africa??
Active Africa Adventures and Touring is the product of a friendship forged on the rock of Cape Town and the open spaces of the Cape wilderness areas. A passion for the outdoors and an adventurous approach to life ensures that an air of excitement continues to stream into all our activities - we aim to infect all our guests with the same zest for life when experiencing our tours.
The result of 2 years of brainstorming and planning, Active Africa was officially opened in October 2001. The company aims to become the leading provider of adventurous touring alternatives with a specific focus on walking tours and the first choice portal for adventure activities throughout Southern Africa.

Mark Middleton - Director:
A keen outdoor and sporting enthusiast, mountaineer, rock climber, surfer, adventure racer and general "nice guy", Mark has left a successful career as a veterinary surgeon to follow a promising future in the adventure industry. A registered field guide, mountain walking guide and qualified in first aid, Mark has extensive experience in leading groups in wilderness areas and on rivers in South Africa. Mark provides the passion that fuels Active Africa.
Chris Goodwin - Director:
Chris brings to Active Africa his organizational abilities and creative flair gained from 15 years in the corporate hospitality industry. A truly "Active African", Chris is an endurance specialist with specific interests in marathon running and adventure racing combined with a lively passion for mountaineering and rock climbing. A qualified chef, registered field guide, mountain walking guide and trained in first aid, Chris is well equipped to ensure your experience is a memorable one.
Guides and Consultants:
Our guides are mature adults who are young at heart and who - most importantly - enjoy their work. They are chosen for their personalities, their interest in their environment, their experience in the field and their ability to relate to people. All our guides, temporary or full time, are registered tour guides with appropriate skills and qualifications in their area of specialization.
Dave Hart - Senior Guide:
Dave is known as the nicest guy you could meet in the mountains, and always a popular choice amongst the ladies! Big in stature, and bigger in heart, Dave is a passionate rock climber, active sailor and keen naturalist. A skilled carpenter, Dave has supplemented 4 years of experience in the South African Navy with qualifications as a Mountain Walking Guide, Field Guide and in First Aid. You couldn't wish to be in safer hands on any adventure.
Our consultants are adventurous by nature and selected for their organizational abilities, communication skills and experience of the tourism industry. All our consultants are required to actually experience the adventures they promote and an active workshop programme ensures that they stay abreast of the latest the industry has to offer.
Caryn Shelley-Caronti - Sales and Administration Co-ordinator:
After completing a Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences, Caryn took off for Europe to find love, wealth and happiness. After six years abroad, travelling and working in the hospitality and entertainment industry, she returned, having completed an advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management.
